Carl Chapple

Biography

Preferred Medium:
Oil on canvas/panel
Charcoal on paper
Preferred Style:
Keen to engage portrait sitters in the creative process - discussing ideas for poses, compositions, etc.
Describe your early memories of your emerging talent as an artist?:
Being thrilled/inspired/intimidated by great paintings and sculpture. Feel much the same now.
Formal Training:
St Martin's, London
Informal Training:
Ongoing.
Other influences:
After art school I spent a lot of time in Greece, Turkey and Italy, making drawings of Classical and Renaissance paintings and sculpture. Since then my main inspiration has been the people who sit for me - working from the nude for a number of years, before beginning to focus on portraiture in around 2010.
Role of figurative art:
I try to reflect something of the character, ideas and moods of my sitters, as well as impart something of the stillness and silence that painting from life involves.
Favorite Gallery:
Courtauld
Other Interests:
Live comedy, Scrabble, half-hearted runs.
A one line summation of your relationship to art:
'Making the most of the raw materials of futility' - Eugene Debs Hartke
